Like any farm plant, blueberry bushes require water. Our irrigation system is a state-of-the-art, computer-controlled drip system. Using drip irrigation saves water by putting it only where it needs to be: on the plants. Conventional sprinkler systems waste a lot of water when they spray into the air. Much of it vaporizes before it even hits the ground. With drip lines in every row putting water on the plants we reduce the impact our farm has on the water table. Our system also allows us to fertilize through the drip. This cuts down on labor costs and reduces the amount of fertilizer that can overflow into surrounding areas. Tractors are necessary to a farm. We currently manage our operations with just one to perform a the weekly responsibilities of dragging, scooping and pushing things around the field. It's a modest John Deere 4720 with a front scoop. For field prep we rent larger machinery.
